Step 1 - Choosing The Best Command
The command that is most appropriate for your American Eskimo to sit, is well, "Sit". This is the command we will use to teach him/her.
Step 2 - Choosing The Reward
Besides positive reinforcement, you want to make sure you choose a good reward. One that isnt to rewarding, but one that makes your American Eskimo happy. Rewards dont have to be expensive treats, what I find works best are mini carrots you can buy at the produce section for about $1.99 a bag. They are not only very cheap but very healthy and juicy for your American Eskimo. Even better, they can be broken in half, or cut into thirds for making them go even further.
Step 3 - The Preparation
Choose a location, either outside or in the middle of a room inside. Gather your rewards and keep tem hidden. What works well is if you sit on the floor and place them behind you.
What you want to do is give your American Eskimo positive reinformcement before you give them a treat. To get your American Eskimo to bark, the dog needs a point of reference, so you will need to make a similar noise for them to learn. The formula should be as follows. "Command, "Command Training Noise", "Command".
For this example we will say the dog's name is "Champ" the command is "Speak" and the command training noise is "Ruff".

Step 4 - The Training
Begin with positive reinforcement. Say "good boy/girl" then say the command, do the training word "ruff", then say "good boy/girl". Repeat this 3 times, then on the third time give your American Eskimo a treat. Now go back to doing it without a treat. You will be suprised how quickly you start to hear a bark come out, and when you do, use all the positive reinforcement as you can.
You dont want to train for more than 10-15 minutes at a time, as your American Eskimo will get restless or full with treats. When training, train in the same place, your American Eskimo will learn that its training time and ther eis a treat involved.
By doing this a few times a day, with minimal training periods, in about 3 days flat your American Eskimo will have learned how to bark by saying a command.
Taking It Further - Advanced Trick
