It might be helpful to ask students, “What things have you ever bothered about in group projects?” or “If you`re part of a team, what do you like most about your teammates?” Last year, we worked with a group of computer experts who, for the first time, were overwhelmed by the use of group contracts with a group. Many of them had technical skills but did not have the ability to work well in their project groups. Their meetings with customers and employees were too often chaotic. In our experience, you may need to offer some important items if they are not raised by the group. Just ask people: your teamwork agreement must be made accessible and easy to maintain by all team members. It`s easy to forget something you`ve only seen once in a meeting. Find creative ways to get the most important elements of your agreement consistently in your team`s line of sight. One way to do this is to create a mural in the main work area where the instructions are displayed. Here are some important things you need to keep in mind when creating your own teamwork contract. Sometimes, however, a student always violates team agreements and uses all their warnings.
The result is a more serious action that the teacher must decide. In my classes, it`s usually a sit-down meeting with me, the teacher. Meeting with a teacher is the result of several warnings and can never be used as a first option. Students must learn to deal with problems with each other and cannot rely on authority to solve them. For groups working together over a long period of time, it may be worth spending a little more time developing a longer-term group agreement. You can use a process like the one described below. Although the time of a group agreement sometimes seems a little frustrating, you gain that time later. This makes your event much more fluid. Don`t reinterpret what people offer. If you are helping with the formulation process, make sure the group is always happy once the words are written! Other ways to establish group agreements may be more appropriate for shorter meetings or workshops or for groups that do not deal with emotional or controversial topics. This includes: Allow at least 30 minutes to get a group agreement.
Students then have a plan that often accepts a fresh start, and the group can get back to work. Most of the time, and I want to talk about the highest time, this conflict resolution is a success. It is enough to draw the attention of most students to the fact that their actions concern everyone else, and they will do everything in their power to remedy them. Remember that we want peace, and sometimes we have to face the problem to achieve it. Some of the best collaborations I`ve ever had came after one of those heart-to-heart conversations. All of a sudden, everyone feels listened to and appreciated and therefore works harder and with more passion. I draw a lot of attention to my students` dismissal process at the beginning of the school year, when we talk about liability. I want everyone to understand that the group contract must be taken seriously and that there are consequences if it is not complied with. The reality is that students do not want to be fired from their group and they do not want to have to carry out a whole project.
